2022 Quarters Are Worth A Lot More Than 25 Cents

So often when you read about people finding coins that wind up being worth thousands of dollars, you learn that the coins are over 50 years old, but that isn't always the case. In fact, some quarters that are less than a year old are worth way more than just 25 cents, so empty your pockets and check the couch cushions because you might have a very valuable quarter laying around.

It was released in 2022, as part of the U.S. Mint's American Women Quarters Program. On the front of the coin, you'll see George Washington and the year 2022 with the letter "P" under it. On the back, you'll find the first woman ever elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, Wilma Mankiller. On most of her quarters, the famed activist for women's and Native American rights is wrapped in a traditional shawl with the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation to her left, but the more valuable versions of the coins have another feature - a gouge going through part of the coin.

The TikTok account CoinHub shared a video about what to look for, saying that the gouge, which is called a "retained die cut error," can even be present on the heads side of the coin too. They note that coins with larger versions of the error are worth more, some upwards of $400.

Plenty of other newer coins are worth more than face value too. Some common pennies from 1999 are going for a handful of money, as are quarters from 2004. So what do you do if you find one? Well you can put it up for sale on eBay or look online to find a company that buys coins, but you also might want to do some research first about getting your coin graded.
