Several listeners sent me this feature, and it’s about the 20-year love story between Nick and Diane Marson.
On September 11th 2001, Nick was traveling for work when the attacks happened, and U.S. airspace was shut down. His flight was one of 38 diverted to Gander, in Newfoundland, where almost 7,000 people were stranded for days, while this wonderful town took care of them.
And Elvis- you were actually talking about it on the show Friday, it’s the plot to the beautiful Broadway musical, Come From Away!
Well, Nick was looking for a spot to sleep, asked Diane if the empty cot next to her was available, and that was the start. The two started bonding, and instead of sleeping they decided to take a walk around the town together.
They were married less than a year later.
The pair had a lot of survivor’s guilt, finding one another during such a tragedy, but once they started to tell their story the world fell in love. They are actually characters featured IN the musical, Come From Away.
They’ve seen the show over 100 times, and Nick said, “every time we see it it’s like we’re renewing our vows.”
