Cynthia Nixon is getting candid about what she "always hated" on Sex and the City.

Nixon, who portrayed Miranda on the series and its spinoff And Just Like That..., spoke with Grazia in an interview published Monday (May 26) where she reflected on some of the topics that "have really not aged well." The 59-year-old actress explained how she always "hated" the lack of diversity on screen, noting that when the cast brought it up, they were told it reflected the world of Candace Bushnell, whose newspaper column and 1996 book inspired the groundbreaking series, per People.

"It was always very difficult being on a show that was so white. I always hated that. When we would raise it, we were told this is Candace Bushnell's world and it's a very white world. 'I'm like, OK...'" Nixon said. She noted that other plot points like "some of the trans stuff [and] some of the gay stuff" are now "a little cringy" to look back on.

Despite the issues, Nixon understands how "revolutionary" the "feminist show" was and how much of the show is "still pretty great."

"What you have to remember is that we were in our thirties and forties. Of course, I look at the show now, we look like babies, but being single at that age, at that time, still had a kind of stigma," she said, adding, "It's central message was unheard of: 'You can be a woman, you can have a lot of sex with a lot of different people. It didn't make you a slut and it didn't mean you were using sex to get something. You were having sex — because you enjoyed having sex!'"

Nixon's SATC costars Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker recently looked back at their own experience on set when Parker appeared as a guest on Davis' Are You A Charlotte? podcast. Nixon has also sat down with Davis for her own chat where she revealed a surprising misunderstanding she had with Davis at the start of the series.
