The time has come to stock up on your favorite Girl Scout Cookies.
Girl Scout, Veronica “Ronnie” Backenstoe, may just be the most excited Girl Scout to sell delicious Peanut Butter Patties, Caramel Delights, and Thin Mints and she’s been selling them for 88 years now.
The 98 year old joined the Girl Scouts when she was just 10 years old in 1932, the same year the Great Depression was happening. Ronnie studied music when she was younger and knows how to play many instruments like the organ, piano, clarinet, and the trumpet. I became a Girl Scout in 1932," she told WFMZ. “I said. ‘When can I be a Girl Scout?’ My mom said, “When you’re 10,’ so when I was 10, I was ready to go!” Her age hasn’t stopped her from wearing her green beret and Girl Scout uniform to sell her boxes.
When Ronnie first started selling Girl Scout cookies, there were only three types available and each box was only 15 cents. Ronnie’s journey with the Girl Scouts took her to Jamaica and Switzerland with her troop, a journey she describes as a way of life.
She may be older than her fellow Scouts, but her energy is unmatched and she’s not stopping anytime soon. Her stamina, her energy, her mind, she’s non-stop,” Barbara Allen Perelli, the troop leader, told WFMZ.
While many of us would live differently at 98, Ronnie is the happiest when selling her Girl Scout cookies and is looking forward to many more years.
