Tourists at a beach house on Edisto Island, South Carolina, discovered human remains dating back 200 years. Initially mistaking the remains for fossils, the tourists contacted the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office after realizing they were human. The remains were found in the Jeremy Cay community near Legare Road, a historically significant area once home to the 19th-century settlement known as Edingsville Beach.
The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the Edisto Beach Police Department, responded to the scene and secured the area for investigation. The Colleton County Coroner’s Office assisted in recovering the remains, which were sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for forensic analysis and identification.
Authorities are actively investigating the origins of the remains and the circumstances surrounding the individual's death. The identity of the person remains unknown, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The discovery highlights the historical significance of Edingsville Beach, which was once a thriving settlement before being abandoned. The investigation is ongoing, with Colleton County authorities collaborating with the coroner’s office and other agencies to uncover more details about the remains.
