The highly anticipated fourth season of The Crown is almost here. The upcoming installment will introduce Princess Diana—played by Emma Corrin—as a new major player in Buckingham Palace.
While promoting the new season in a recent interview, Corrin opened up about her desire to portray the beloved People's Princess in an honest way, including her struggle with bulimia. The 24-year-old actress shared that she insisted the writer's include Princess Diana's experience with the eating disorder in their scripts.
“We’d been working on her body language, and we put together a document that we sent to the script team and said: ‘Can you include some of this in the writing because we’d love to really flesh out those scenes? Corrin said.
“I felt that if we were trying to depict bulimia in an honest way, we had to actually show it – otherwise it’s a disservice to anyone who has been through that,” she continued “I don’t think we should shy away from those conversations; Diana was very candid about her experience with bulimia, and I so admire that.”
Corrin did her own extensive research on the subject, as well, to ensure her portrayal honestly depicted the illness. “You can’t do justice to everything she was experiencing without including that,” Corrin told Variety. “It was so symptomatic of the emotional turmoil and all the suppressed emotions that she was feeling."
Here's the official synopsis for the upcoming fourth season of The Crown:
As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles, who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.
The Crown returns with new episodes on Sunday, Nov. 15. Seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
