'Tiger King' TV Show Casts Oscar-Winner To Play Joe Exotic

An eight-episode series based on the story told in the hit Netflix documentary show Tiger King is coming to TV and producers have cast an Oscar-winner in the title role. Portraying the eccentric Joe Exotic will be an eccentric man himself: Nicolas Cage.

According to Variety, it marks the first regular television role for Cage. In the series, he'll show how Joe Schreibvogel went on to become Joe Exotic, the strange Oklahoma zookeeper who would lose himself to the character he created and go on to be arrested for hiring to murder someone, as well as for violating animal laws. However, the source material for the show isn't the Netflix docu-series - it's actually an article from Texas Monthly called "Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild."

It's not the only Tiger King series coming to the small screen either. A separate scripted show is also on the way. No word on who will be playing Joe in that one, but on it, Kate McKinnon from SNL will portray Carole Baskin, the big cat reserve owner Joe allegedly tried to have killed.

No word yet when either series is set to air.
