Jared Leto and Shawn Mendes just nailed the spirit of exaggeration and we’re so here for it. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman brought his own decapitated spare head (á la the Gucci runway) to the 2019 Met Gala on Monday, May 6, and at one point during the evening, passed it over to Shawn Mendes.
Leto, who is known for going all out at the annual event, sported a red Gucci ensemble with jewel detailing. According to Vogue, Leto’s spare head took an estimated six months to prepare.
“In the spirit of exaggeration, let me say that Shawn Mendes cradling Jared Leto's severed head is the most beautiful thing I've EVER seen,” one person on Twitter wrote while another added: “Hot potato but make it fashion @JaredLeto @ShawnMendes #MetGala.”
The 2019 Met Gala theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and a nod to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.’” Susan Sontag's 1964 essay defines camp as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration."
