Madonna Announces New Album 'Madame X' With Provocative Teaser: Watch

Madonna has revealed her new album will be called Madame X.

On Sunday (April 14), the pop icon announced her first project in four years with an enigmatic visual teasing what sounds like the first single off Madonna's new LP. The video, directed by Nuno Xico and Steven Klein, signals Madonna's latest work since 2015's Rebel Heart.

“The thing that hurt the most was that I wasn’t lost," the pop maven sings throughout the preview, which depicts Madonna as her eponymous alter ego. In the clip's description, Madame X is called a freedom-fighting "secret agent" who changes identities as she travels the globe, to bring "light to dark places."

Quite the shape-shifter, the "Sorry" singer also describes Madame X as “a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother, a child, a teacher, a nun, a singer, a saint, a wh**e … a spy in the house of love.”

While speaking with Vogue Italia in August 2018, the "Ray of Light" songstress said she'd been working with "lots of really amazing musicians" for her upcoming fourteenth LP and listed Lisbon as inspiration for the record. Months later, Madonna officially declared the album would drop this year.

She also teased her latest project on Instagram, with a set of Boomerang videos of her wearing a see-through polka dotted ensemble while playing instruments to promote Madame X.
